nearly every tourist in Bangkok comes through the traveler ghetto of Khao San Road. Many mid-range accommodations have nudged out some of the cheap budget haunts that I remember from my first time around.

Actually you should always buy MORE than one thing from a vendor as the price per piece comes down. You're getting charged the highest price from only buying 'one piece per vendor' so not a good tip, IMO.

And I've lived in Bangkok for 10 years, so I do know how to buy here.

Actually,Khao San Road is one of the most expensive areas in Bangkok as it caters to tourists. Prices at food stalls are around 5-10 baht more expensive than many other Bangkok areas, hotels are no cheaper than anywhere else (and usually a lot more squalid) and ONLY tourists shop at the stalls on Khao San as they are always 50-100 baht more expensive than stalls in other areas of the city. You can tell you're a tourist if you think Khao San Road is the place to go for cheap bargains, LOL.

Most of the Bangkok Hotels I've ever staid in were close to this street. I love this town – I love this street as well, for it's colorfulness, for its life… You know what I mean. I like it that is always crowded… and you simply… loose yourself in that… sea of people…
