Are you a Twitter Addict?

Newsflash. The 140 character social networking phenomenon can be used for more than just telling the world what you had for breakfast this morning. Twitter is a great way to scope out online travel deals and stay in the loop about last minute specials. Here are a few tips to tweeting your way to cheaper travel:

1) After you’ve signed up for a Twitter account, follow tourism industry professionals who are tapped into the scene:

@Kayak (their Twitter team shares hand-picked travel deals on flights, hotels and vacation packages)
@traveldeals
@smartertravel
@JetBlueCheeps

2) Following Tourism Boards of the destination you want to visit is a great way to find out about hotel specials, discounts on attractions or upcoming special events.  Here are a few examples…
@MexicoTB
@visitflorida
@TourismNewZealand
@VisitBritain

3) To find a ton of travel frugal tweets and for inspiration on who to follow, go to Twitter Search and type in relevant hashtags:
#traveldeals
#farealert
#traveltuesday

4) Stay on top of travel news with these well-read travel journalists/blogs:
@worldhum
@jaunted
@gadling
@MichelleHiggins
@WendyPerrin
@traveldudes
@BrilliantTripsBlog
and yours truly @juliadimon

  • Such a helpful post, thanks!
  • Julia, great list. I also like following some of the airlines that I frequently use because they occasionally post alerts to fare sales. For example, Virgin gave away a bunch of great fares at 50% off last week to Twitter followers.
  • Nice list. love twitter, especially ones that discuss daily events happening in my hometown of NYC. A few of my favorites are:

    @NewYorkology

    I'm sure every large city is well represented on twitter.
  • LONELY PLANET is my favorite
